South African wholesale diesel went up R2.84 a litre on 7 October 2026. Inland 0.05% diesel is now R31.95 a litre, up from R19.34 a year ago — a rise of 65.2%. Petrol rose 39.9% over the same year. It is the third increase in a row, and it takes diesel past the May peak to the highest price in this series.
The one-line version. On a Johannesburg–Cape Town run at 2.5 km per litre, fuel alone now costs about R17 854 one way. That is R1 587 more than last month and R7 046 more than the same trip in October 2025 — before you have paid a toll, a driver or a tyre.
What the price is, right now
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) sets South African fuel prices monthly. The change is announced in the days before it takes effect, on the first Wednesday of the month. These prices were announced on 5 October and took effect on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
| Product | Inland (Gauteng) | Coastal | Change on 7 Oct |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel 0.05% sulphur (500 ppm), wholesale | R31.95 | R31.08 | +R2.84 |
| Diesel 0.005% sulphur (50 ppm), wholesale | R32.80 | R31.93 | +R3.24 |
| Petrol 95 ULP, retail | R30.25 | R29.38 | +R3.33 |
| Petrol 93 ULP, retail | R29.88 | — | +R3.12 |
Why diesel has no pump price and petrol does. Petrol is sold at a fixed regulated price: every station in a zone charges the same. Diesel is not. What the DMPR publishes for diesel is a wholesale list price, and the retailer adds their own margin on top. That is why two truck stops 40 km apart can differ by 80 cents, and why a fuel card or a bulk supply deal is worth real money on diesel in a way it never is on petrol.
The 14-month trend
This is the part that gets lost in the monthly headline. October is not just another increase. At R31.95 it passes the May peak of R31.18 and is the highest price in this series.

What the shape of that line tells you
- Sep 2025 to Mar 2026 was flat. Six months inside a R2 band, ending at a low of R17.92 in February.
- April and May broke it. Diesel went from R18.54 to R31.18 in two months — up 68%. That is the single biggest cost event a South African operator has had to absorb in this cycle.
- June and July gave some of it back, down to R24.79.
- August, September and October took it straight back up and past it, to R31.95 — R0.77 above the May peak, and R14.03 above the February low.
If you priced a contract off the February number, you are R14.03 a litre underwater. At 2.5 km per litre that is R5.61 on every kilometre you run, and it does not come back on its own. This is what a fuel surcharge clause is for — and it is the single most valuable page on this site if you have not got one.
What actually drove it
Most operators experience a fuel increase as weather — it arrives, and you absorb it. It is not weather. It is three separable forces, and two of them are local.
| Force | What it did | Can South Africa control it? |
|---|---|---|
| The global product price | The DMPR cited continued US–Iran tension, uncertainty over the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, higher shipping costs and decreasing inventories. Brent averaged US$101.00 over the October review period, up from US$87.89. The international product price alone added 280.17 c/l to the basic fuel price of diesel — almost the whole of the 284.38 c/l increase. | No |
| The rand | The DMPR recorded the rand as almost unchanged over the October review period, from R16.213 to R16.212 to the US dollar. That took 0.22 c/l off diesel. The currency did nothing to soften this increase. | Indirectly |
| Tax and the slate | The slate levy rose from 83.28 c/l to 87.66 c/l on 7 October — a 4.38 c/l increase — against a cumulative negative slate balance of R10.45 billion. Government also ran temporary general fuel levy relief of R3.93 a litre on diesel from 1 April 2026, halved to R1.96 in June and ended on 1 July. | Yes |
Read the third row again. The diesel levy relief ended on 1 July 2026. Part of what you are paying now is not an oil price at all — it is the removal of a subsidy you had for three months and may not have noticed arriving. The slate is the same kind of thing: a R10.45 billion shortfall being recovered from you at 87.66 cents a litre.
What it costs on the corridors we measure
Everything above is national. This is the part that is ours. We hold road-network distances for 225 of our 269 active corridors, measured against the actual road, not straight-line. Here is what the October increase does to a one-way run, at 2.5 km per litre.
| Lane | km | Fuel, one way | vs September | vs Oct 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Johannesburg → Durban | 571 | R7 297 | +R649 | +R2 880 |
| Johannesburg → Cape Town | 1 397 | R17 854 | +R1 587 | +R7 046 |
| Johannesburg → Beitbridge | 540 | R6 901 | +R613 | +R2 724 |
| Beitbridge → Durban | 1 103 | R14 096 | +R1 253 | +R5 564 |
| Johannesburg → Harare | 1 121 | R14 326 | +R1 273 | +R5 654 |
| Durban → Harare | 1 680 | R21 470 | +R1 908 | +R8 474 |
Do this with your own number.
Fuel per kilometre = diesel price ÷ your km per litre.
At R31.95: 2.0 km/l is R15.98/km · 2.5 km/l is R12.78/km · 3.0 km/l is R10.65/km.
The October increase alone added R1.42, R1.14 and R0.95 per kilometre at those three consumption rates.
And every one of those numbers doubles if the truck comes home empty. That is not a fuel problem, it is a load problem — what empty running actually costs works it out.
Where diesel is cheaper across the border
The old rule was simple: fill up in South Africa. That rule is weaker than it was, and the reason is this year’s increase.
| Price | In US dollars | What kind of price | |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Africa, inland | R31.95 | US$1.93 | wholesale list — retail is higher |
| South Africa, coastal | R31.08 | US$1.88 | wholesale list — retail is higher |
| Zimbabwe (ZERA ceiling) | R33.74 | US$2.04 | maximum pump price |
Zimbabwe’s pump ceiling is about 6% above South Africa’s wholesale price. Because South African retail diesel sits above the wholesale list, the real gap at the pump is smaller than 6% — and it has narrowed sharply, because South African diesel rose 65.2% in a year while Zimbabwe’s ceiling moved 15.3% since March. Still fill in South Africa where the tank allows it, but the arbitrage is no longer the free money it was in 2025. The Zimbabwe numbers are here.

Questions people ask
What is the diesel price in South Africa in October 2026?
R31.95 a litre for 0.05% sulphur diesel, wholesale, inland; R31.08 at the coast. The 0.005% grade is R32.80 inland. These took effect on 7 October 2026. Diesel has no fixed retail price, so what you pay at the pump will be above the wholesale figure.
Who sets the fuel price in South Africa?
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR). Note the name — it was the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) until the department was split, and a lot of published material still uses the old name.
When is the fuel price announced?
In the days before the change, which takes effect on the first Wednesday of the month. The October 2026 change was announced on 5 October and took effect on 7 October.
Why did diesel go up more than petrol?
Diesel and petrol are different products with different international prices, different tax treatment and a different slate position. Over the year to October 2026 diesel rose 65.2% and petrol 39.9%. If your costing tracks the petrol headline in the news, it has understated your diesel bill by more than a third.
Is this the highest diesel has been?
In this series, yes. Inland wholesale diesel reached R31.95 on 7 October 2026, R0.77 above the previous peak of R31.18 on 6 May 2026.
How we put this together
The price series is the published record from the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa, which lists the DMPR-gazetted prices for each month. We pulled it on 11 October 2026 and checked it two ways: the October inland and coastal 0.05% figures match the press reporting of the DMPR announcement, and the September-to-October change computed from the series (284.38 and 324.38 cents) is exactly the increase the DMPR announced for the two diesel grades. Corridor distances are our own, measured on the road network. The consumption figures are illustrative and stated as such — use yours.
