Zimbabwe’s diesel ceiling is US$1.95 a litre — ZERA’s maximum pump price, effective 7 August 2026. Petrol E20 is US$1.96. Prices are set in US dollars, which means the currency swing that drives South African fuel does not reach the Zimbabwean pump the same way. That is the single most important thing to understand about running a truck here.
The one-line version. A Beitbridge–Harare run is 585 km on the road. At US$1.95 a litre and 2.5 km per litre, the diesel for that leg is about US$456 — roughly US$34 more than the same fuel bought in South Africa. Fill before the border where the tank allows it, but the gap is much smaller than it was.
Who sets the price, and how often
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) sets fuel prices, under the Energy Regulatory Authority Act [Chapter 13:23] of 2011. What ZERA publishes is a ceiling — the maximum a station may legally charge. A station may sell below it, and on a competitive stretch some do.
The cycle is described as monthly. The 2026 record is not. ZERA reviewed prices twice in June 2026 and twice in July 2026. Plan on a review at least monthly and be ready for one mid-month — a rate quoted on a four-week-old fuel assumption has been wrong twice this year already.
| Current ceiling | In ZWG | Effective | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel (D50) | US$1.95 | ZWG 51.98 | 7 August 2026 |
| Petrol blend (E20) | US$1.96 | ZWG 52.34 | 7 August 2026 |
The trend through 2026
ZERA does not publish a downloadable price history. This table is assembled from the individual reviews, each with its own source, and it starts in March 2026 — that is the window we can stand behind. We add each new ZERA review to it as it is announced.
| Effective | Diesel ceiling | Change | Source |

What it shows
- The year’s high was April, at US$2.11.
- It has come down 7.6% from that peak and has been flat at US$1.95 since 24 July.
- Net movement since March is +10.2% — a fraction of what South African operators absorbed over the same period.
What drives it, and why it is not the same as South Africa
This is the genuinely useful difference, and it is worth understanding before you price a cross-border rate.
| Force | South Africa | Zimbabwe |
|---|---|---|
| Global product price | Passed through monthly into the basic fuel price | Passed through into the ZERA ceiling |
| Local currency | Major driver. The rand moves and the pump price moves with it | Largely removed at the pump. The ceiling is denominated in US dollars, so a local currency move changes the ZWG price, not the dollar price |
| Tax and levies | General fuel levy, RAF levy, carbon levy and the slate, all published per litre | Duties and levies are inside the ZERA build-up |
What this means when you quote. If you are paid in US dollars and you buy diesel in US dollars, your biggest cost is close to fixed for the length of a normal contract. If you are paid in ZWG and buy diesel at a dollar ceiling, you are carrying the currency risk yourself — and that risk belongs in the rate, not in your margin.
What it costs on the Zimbabwean corridors we measure
We hold road-network distances for 225 of our 269 active corridors, measured on the actual road. 29 of them cross at Beitbridge and 19 at Chirundu. Here is the diesel for a one-way leg inside Zimbabwe, at 2.5 km per litre.
| Leg | km | Diesel at the ZERA ceiling | Same fuel bought in South Africa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beitbridge → Harare | 585 | US$456 | US$422 |
| Harare → Bulawayo | 442 | US$345 | US$319 |
| Bulawayo → Beitbridge | 324 | US$253 | US$234 |
| Harare → Mutare (Forbes border) | 262 | US$204 | US$189 |
| Harare → Chirundu → Lusaka | 493 | US$385 | US$355 |
The Beitbridge fill decision
Every operator running north has the same question at Beitbridge: fill before or after?
| Diesel | Type of price | |
|---|---|---|
| South Africa, inland wholesale | US$1.80 | wholesale list — the pump is higher |
| Zimbabwe, ZERA ceiling | US$1.95 | maximum pump price |
The honest answer: still fill in South Africa, but the edge has shrunk. On paper the gap is about 8%, and because the South African number is a wholesale price and the Zimbabwean one is a pump price, the real pump-to-pump gap is smaller again. South African diesel rose 49.7% in the year to September 2026; the Zimbabwean ceiling moved 10.2% since March. The South African series is here.
What that changes in practice. Running the tank down to arrive at Beitbridge nearly empty used to be worth the risk. At a gap this size it buys you less than it used to, and it costs you flexibility if the queue is long or the pump at Beitbridge is dry. Weigh the saving against standing time before you plan the trip around it.

Questions people ask
What is the diesel price in Zimbabwe now?
US$1.95 a litre — ZERA’s maximum pump price for D50 diesel, effective 7 August 2026. In local currency that is ZWG 51.98. Stations may sell below the ceiling but not above it.
Who sets fuel prices in Zimbabwe?
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority, ZERA, under the Energy Regulatory Authority Act [Chapter 13:23] of 2011. It publishes a maximum price, not a fixed one.
How often does ZERA change the fuel price?
It is normally described as monthly, but in 2026 ZERA reviewed twice in June and twice in July. Treat it as at least monthly, and check before you commit to a long quote.
Is diesel cheaper in South Africa or Zimbabwe?
South Africa, but by less than it used to be. Zimbabwe’s pump ceiling is around 8% above South Africa’s wholesale diesel price as at 1 September 2026 — and since South African retail sits above wholesale, the gap you actually see at two pumps is smaller than that.
Why is Zimbabwean fuel priced in US dollars?
ZERA sets and publishes the ceiling in US dollars and gives a ZWG equivalent alongside it. For an operator the practical effect is that the dollar price of diesel is steadier than a rand price, and the currency risk sits with whoever is earning in local currency.
How we put this together
The current price is read directly from ZERA. The trend table is assembled from individual dated reviews, because ZERA does not publish a downloadable series — each row carries its own source, and the window starts in March 2026 because that is the earliest 2026 review we could date to a primary or press record. Corridor distances are our own, measured on the road network. Consumption at 2.5 km per litre is illustrative; use your own figure.
