South African wholesale diesel went up R2.94 a litre on 2 September 2026. Inland 0.05% diesel is now R29.11 a litre, up from R19.44 a year ago — a rise of 49.7%. Petrol rose 24.9% over the same year. Diesel went up exactly twice as fast, and almost nobody said so.
The one-line version. On a Johannesburg–Cape Town run at 2.5 km per litre, fuel alone now costs about R16 267 one way. That is R1 642 more than last month and R5 402 more than the same trip in September 2025 — before you have paid a toll, a driver or a tyre.
What the price is, right now
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) sets South African fuel prices monthly. The change is announced in the last days of the month and takes effect on the first Wednesday of the next one. These prices took effect on Wednesday 2 September 2026.

Why diesel has no pump price and petrol does. Petrol is sold at a fixed regulated price: every station in a zone charges the same. Diesel is not. What the DMPR publishes for diesel is a wholesale list price, and the retailer adds their own margin on top. That is why two truck stops 40 km apart can differ by 80 cents, and why a fuel card or a bulk supply deal is worth real money on diesel in a way it never is on petrol.
The 13-month trend
This is the part that gets lost in the monthly headline. The September increase is large, but it is not the highest diesel has been this year. May was worse.

What the shape of that line tells you
- Sep 2025 to Mar 2026 was flat. Six months inside a R2 band, ending at a low of R17.92 in February.
- April and May broke it. Diesel went from R18.54 to R31.18 in two months — up 68%. That is the single biggest cost event a South African operator has had to absorb in this cycle.
- June and July gave some of it back, down to R24.79.
- August and September took it straight back up, to R29.11 — still R2.06 below the May peak, and R11.19 above the February low.
If you priced a contract off the February number, you are R11.19 a litre underwater. At 2.5 km per litre that is R4.48 on every kilometre you run, and it does not come back on its own. This is what a fuel surcharge clause is for — and it is the single most valuable page on this site if you have not got one.
What actually drove it
Most operators experience a fuel increase as weather — it arrives, and you absorb it. It is not weather. It is three separable forces, and two of them are local.

Read the third row again. The diesel levy relief ended on 1 July 2026. Part of what you are paying now is not an oil price at all — it is the removal of a subsidy you had for three months and may not have noticed arriving. The slate is the same kind of thing: a R9.5 billion shortfall being recovered from you at 83.28 cents a litre.

Fuel per kilometre = diesel price ÷ your km per litre.
At R29.11: 2.0 km/l is R14.56/km · 2.5 km/l is R11.64/km · 3.0 km/l is R9.70/km.
The September increase alone added R1.47, R1.18 and R0.98 per kilometre at those three consumption rates.
And every one of those numbers doubles if the truck comes home empty. That is not a fuel problem, it is a load problem — what empty running actually costs works it out.
Where diesel is cheaper across the border
The old rule was simple: fill up in South Africa. That rule is weaker than it was, and the reason is this year’s increase.

Zimbabwe’s pump ceiling is about 8% above South Africa’s wholesale price. Because South African retail diesel sits above the wholesale list, the real gap at the pump is smaller than 8% — and it has narrowed sharply, because South African diesel rose 49.7% in a year while Zimbabwe’s ceiling moved 10.2% since March. What is the diesel price in South Africa in September 2026?
R29.11 a litre for 0.05% sulphur diesel, wholesale, inland; R28.24 at the coast. The 0.005% grade is R30.05 inland. These took effect on 2 September 2026. Diesel has no fixed retail price, so what you pay at the pump will be above the wholesale figure.

Diesel and petrol are different products with different international prices, different tax treatment and a different slate position. Over the year to September 2026 diesel rose 49.7% and petrol 24.9%. If your costing tracks the petrol headline in the news, it has understated your diesel bill by half.
Is this the highest diesel has been?
No. Inland wholesale diesel peaked at R31.18 on 6 May 2026. September’s R29.11 is R2.06 below that.

We pulled it on 1 September 2026 and checked it three ways: the September inland and coastal figures match the press reporting of the DMPR announcement; the July figure matches an independent tracker; and the August-to-September change computed from the series (+R2.939 and +R3.149) matches the +R2.93 and +R3.14 the DMPR announced.
