Countries We Cover: Corridors, Hubs and Border Posts Across Southern and East Africa

“Which countries do you cover?” has three different answers, and most platforms only give you the flattering one.

Here are all three. 14 countries you can route a load to. 17 with named freight hubs. 21 in our place index. This page says exactly which, and what each one actually gets you.

The three levels of coverage

• Routable — the country has freight hubs and corridors, so you can post a load, search for one, and match a truck to a lane. 14 countries.
• Named — the country has hubs in our location list but no corridor yet, so places resolve and appear, but there is no lane to match against. 3 more.
• Indexed — the country is in our place gazetteer only. A place name will resolve to coordinates; nothing else. 4 more.

The distinction matters because the numbers look impressive at the wrong level. Our gazetteer holds 152 753 places across 21 countries. That is a genuinely large index and it is not coverage — a place you can spell is not a lane you can run.

Where the depth inverts — and why we are showing you

Read down the last two columns and the table stops being tidy. Three cases are worth knowing about before you plan around them:

• DR Congo has the most place data of any country we hold — 37 157 — and not one border post. The Katanga copper corridor is one of the busiest freight routes on the subcontinent, and Kasumbalesa is missing from our crossings list. We know; it is being fixed.
• Angola has 17 141 places, one hub, and zero corridors. You can name a town in Angola and we will resolve it. You cannot yet match a truck to a lane there.
• Lesotho has four hubs and one corridor. More entry points than routes — the opposite shape to Botswana, which has two hubs and twenty-one corridors because it is a transit country.

Madagascar is the honest oddity. 24 173 places indexed and nothing else, because there is no road from the mainland. The gazetteer covers it; road freight cannot.

More than half the network crosses a border. That is not incidental — it is what the region’s freight actually is, and it is why a corridor here is a lane between two countries rather than a route between two depots.

195 of 226 corridors carry a real road distance, computed by routing the actual road network rather than measuring a straight line between two cities. The remaining 31 do not, and are shown without one rather than with a guess.

What this means when you post a load

1. Type your real pickup point, not the nearest big city. The gazetteer will resolve it — that is what 152 753 places are for — and the system rolls it up to the hub behind the scenes.
2. The hub pair is the corridor. Your last-mile detail is kept; the matching happens on the hub-to-hub lane.
3. If your country is in the bottom half of the table, expect to be able to name places but not to match a lane yet.

Corridors belong to the truck, not to the operator — each vehicle carries its own lanes, up to five. If you run cross-border, that is where to set them.

Questions people ask

Which countries does Kweli cover?
Fourteen countries are routable — South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Botswana, Malawi, DR Congo, Namibia, Kenya, Eswatini, Rwanda, Uganda and Lesotho. Three more have named hubs but no corridors yet: Angola, Burundi and South Sudan. Four are in the place index only: Madagascar, Mauritius, Ethiopia and Somalia.

How many cross-border corridors are there?
121 of 226 active corridors cross a border — 53.5%. More than half the network is international.

Can I post a load to Angola?
You can name Angolan places — we index 17 141 of them — but Angola has no corridors yet, so there is no lane to match a truck against. It is named, not routable.

Do you cover East Africa?
Partly. Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda are routable, with Tanzania the deepest at 7 freight hubs and 21 corridors. Ethiopia and Somalia are in the place index only.

What is a freight hub?
A hub is a city that anchors corridors. Every corridor runs hub to hub, and smaller towns attach to their nearest hub, so you enter your real location and the system resolves it. There are 78 hubs across all countries, plus 12 ports.

How accurate are your corridor distances?
195 of 226 corridors carry a distance computed by routing the real road network, not a straight line. The other 31 have no distance recorded, and we show nothing rather than an estimate.
