Zambia Cross-Border Trucking Overview
Zambia is one of SADC's most active landlocked transit markets. It shares borders with 8 countries and serves as a transit hub for Democratic Republic of Congo mining imports, making it critical to understand Zambia's regulatory framework before operating here.

- Customs: Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) — single customs territory with SADC partners
- Road network: 67,671 km total, 9,403 km paved (Great North Road, Great East Road, TAZARA Corridor Road)
- Currency: Zambian Kwacha (ZMW)
- Speed limit for HCVs: 80 km/h on highways

Major Border Posts into Zambia

Located 344 km south of Lusaka on the Great North Road. Primary corridor: South Africa → Zimbabwe → Zambia (Lusaka, Copperbelt). Waiting times: 3-8 hours (improved significantly since OSBP opened).
Kazungula Bridge (Zambia/Botswana)
The newest major crossing — operational 24/7 since February 2026. Bypasses Zimbabwe completely for traffic from South Africa and Botswana. Located 70 km from Livingstone. OSBP with electronic clearance. Wait times typically 1-3 hours.
Tunduma/Nakonde (Zambia/Tanzania)
The TAZARA corridor entry point. Tunduma (Tanzania side) / Nakonde (Zambia side). Operating hours: 06:00-22:00. Located 350 km north of Lusaka. Used for freight from Dar es Salaam port. Wait times: 4-12 hours depending on volumes.
Kasumbalesa (Zambia/DRC)
The Copperbelt's main crossing for DRC-Zambia freight. Located in Chililabombwe. High volumes of mining equipment and copper concentrate. Operating hours: 06:00-22:00. Congestion-prone — allow extra transit time.
