Border Posts in Southern Africa: Hours, One-Stop Crossings and Operator Guides

Two things about a border post decide your trip, and you can know both before you leave. When it is open, and whether it is one-stop. Everything else — the queue, the paperwork, the weighbridge — sits on top of those two.

This page lists 24 border posts across 11 countries, with their operating hours and their one-stop status, and links to the detailed guides we have written for eight of them.

The hours are the cost nobody prices

Of the 24 posts below, only 7 run 24 hours. Nine close at 18:00. The rest shut somewhere between 18:00 and 22:00.

Arrive at Forbes at 18:05 and you are not in a queue — you are parked until 06:00. That is eleven hours, and no amount of paperwork readiness or clearing-agent relationship shortens it by a minute. It is the single most expensive thing that can happen at a border and it is entirely avoidable, because the closing time is not a secret.

Plan the leg to the border, not the border itself. If your arrival estimate lands within about two hours of a closing time, you are gambling on a road you do not control.

One-stop border posts: five of twenty-four

At an ordinary crossing you clear twice — once leaving, once entering, at two sets of offices with two queues. A one-stop border post (OSBP) puts both countries’ officials in one facility, so you stop once.

Three of the five are also 24-hour. That combination — one clearance, no gate curfew — is why Lebombo and Nakonde carry the traffic they do, and it is worth a detour on a route where you have a genuine choice.

What we are not going to tell you: the waiting time

Every article about Southern African borders carries a table of typical waiting times. This one does not, and the reason is worth explaining because it says something about how numbers like that are usually made.

We hold two internal sets of wait-time estimates, and they disagree. On seven posts where both have a figure, five of the seven differ — Beitbridge by two full hours.

Neither set was measured. Both were entered by hand when the data was first set up. We do not time trucks through borders, we have no feed from any border authority, and no operator on our platform has yet recorded a crossing time against a trip. So we have two opinions, we cannot say which is better, and publishing either would turn a guess into a figure people plan around.

A wait time is not a property of a border post anyway. It is a property of a border post on a particular day, in a particular direction, with particular paperwork. Beitbridge in the second week of December is not Beitbridge in February. A single number cannot hold that, and the ones you see published usually do not say which day they describe.

What we publish instead is the part that is stable — the gate hours, the one-stop status, the countries either side. Those are true every day, and between them they account for more avoidable delay than the queue does.

And what our list is missing

Two crossings we have written full guides about are not in the table above, because our reference data does not hold them:

• Kasumbalesa (Zambia – DRC) — the Copperbelt crossing. We hold no DRC border posts at all, on either side, despite the Katanga copper corridor being one of the busiest freight routes on the subcontinent.
• Songwe (Tanzania – Malawi) — a one-stop post on the Dar es Salaam to Malawi route.

Both have guides linked below. The gap is in our structured list, not in our coverage — and it is recorded here rather than quietly rounded off, because a reference table that looks complete is worse than one that says where it stops.

What actually slows a crossing

Beyond the gate hours, the delays that recur are documentary rather than physical. The three that come up most:

1. Paperwork that is incomplete rather than wrong. A missing document is a return trip; a wrong one is an argument. Our cross-border document checklist lists what travels with the load.
2. Permits. A foreign truck operating in another SADC country needs the right cross-border permit, and there are things it may not do even with one. See cross-border permits and cabotage.

None of these is fixed at the border. All of them are fixed before you get there, which is the general shape of the whole subject.

Which border posts in Southern Africa are open 24 hours?
Seven of the twenty-four we list: Beitbridge, Lebombo/Ressano Garcia, Maseru Bridge, Nakop/Ariamsvlei, Vioolsdrift/Noordoewer, Nakonde/Tunduma and Namanga. Nine others close at 18:00.

What is a one-stop border post?
A crossing where both countries’ officials work in one facility, so you clear once instead of twice. We list five: Chirundu, Kazungula Bridge, Lebombo/Ressano Garcia, Nakonde/Tunduma and Namanga.

How long is the wait at Beitbridge?
We do not publish a figure. We hold two internal estimates that disagree by two hours, neither was measured, and a wait time depends on the day, the direction and your paperwork rather than on the border post itself. Beitbridge is open 24 hours, which is the part we can state reliably.

What time does Forbes border post close?
18:00, opening again at 06:00. Arriving after closing means an eleven-hour wait that has nothing to do with queues.

Which is the busiest border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe?
Beitbridge, and it is the only crossing between the two countries in our list. It runs 24 hours and long queues are common.
