Cape Town and the Western Cape are one of South Africa's most active freight origins — and one of the most challenging areas to find return loads coming in. For the road itself — the 1 397 km N1 route, its four toll plazas and the 320 km Karoo stretch with almost nothing on it — see our Johannesburg to Cape Town corridor guide. This guide covers available truck loads in and out of Cape Town, the key collection points, seasonal freight patterns, and how to find verified loads on the N1, N2, and N7 corridors.
Cape Town Freight Overview
The Western Cape generates two distinct freight profiles:
Outbound (Cape Town to the rest of SA): Agricultural produce dominates — citrus, table grapes, deciduous fruit, wine, seafood from the Cape Town harbour and Saldanha Bay. These are high-value, seasonal, temperature-sensitive loads with strong demand for reefer and well-ventilated tautliners.
Inbound (into Cape Town): Retail goods, FMCG, electronics, and manufactured products from Gauteng and the East Rand. The Western Cape imports more than it exports by volume, which means northbound (outbound from Cape Town) capacity is often tighter than southbound.
Key Collection Points in and Around Cape Town
- Cape Town CBD & harbour — import containers, general cargo, fresh fish from the harbour
- Montague Gardens / Bellville — largest industrial logistics hub in the Western Cape. FMCG, cold chain, warehouse distribution.
- Paarl / Wellington — wine country. Bottled wine, bulk wine tankers, agricultural inputs.
- Stellenbosch / Somerset West — wine, agricultural produce, manufacturing.
- Elgin / Grabouw — deciduous fruit capital. Apples, pears. High reefer demand February–May.
- Hex River Valley (De Doorns) — largest table grape-producing area in SA. January–April peak.
- Citrusdal / Ceres — citrus and vegetables. June–September citrus peak.
- Saldanha Bay — iron ore exports, steel imports, fish. West Coast N7 route.
Main Corridors Out of Cape Town
N1 — Cape Town to Johannesburg (1,400 km)
The primary freight corridor. Northbound carries fruit, wine, fish, and general cargo. Southbound carries FMCG, retail, and manufactured goods. Detailed N1 backhaul guide here.
N2 — Cape Town to Port Elizabeth / East London / Durban
Coastal route. Carries agricultural produce from the Garden Route, general cargo, and bulk goods. Longer and slower than the N1 but important for Eastern Cape destinations.
N7 — Cape Town to Springbok / Namibia
Northern Cape and Namibia corridor. Mining equipment northbound, minerals southbound. Lower frequency than N1 but higher per-load value for cross-border runs.

Rate figures removed, 15 August 2026. This page previously carried per-kilometre and per-load rate ranges. They were not derived from any rate dataset we hold — we could not show you where a single one came from, so we took them down rather than leave them standing as the anchor for your next negotiation. What we publish instead is computed and checkable: corridor distances from our own route geometry, toll costs from the SANRAL Class 4 schedule, and the current DMRE diesel price. Build your rate from your own cost per kilometre plus those inputs, and know your floor before you quote.

The coastal alternative to going inland runs on the N2: our Durban to Gqeberha corridor guide has the measured 941 km route, the single toll plaza at R162, and why the cheapest tolls in South Africa are still not the number that decides the month.
Heading down the Garden Route instead? Our Cape Town to Gqeberha corridor guide covers the 749 km N2 — Sir Lowry’s and Houwhoek passes inside the first 83 km, a town every 30 km, and the single toll plaza at Tsitsikamma.
