JHB to Cape Town Backhaul — Find Return Loads on the N1 Corridor

The N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town is 1,400 km of the most expensive empty running in South Africa. Our Johannesburg to Cape Town corridor guide puts a measured number on it: R15 900 in fuel and tolls, thrown away on every empty leg. At R12–R16 per kilometre in fuel and fixed costs for a 34-ton rig, an empty return from Cape Town to Johannesburg costs R16,800–R22,400 before you've earned a cent. Finding a backhaul load on this corridor is not a bonus — it's essential for profitability.

Why the N1 Backhaul Is So Valuable

The JHB–Cape Town corridor is asymmetric. Southbound (to Cape Town) typically carries FMCG goods, electronics, manufactured products, and retail stock from the Gauteng industrial heartland to the Western Cape. Northbound (the backhaul direction, Cape Town to JHB) carries the Western Cape's agricultural output: citrus, grapes, deciduous fruit, wine, and fish.

Because of this natural imbalance — Cape Town exports high-value perishables, JHB exports dry goods — there is consistent demand for backhaul capacity northbound, particularly during the summer fruit season (January–May) and winter citrus season (June–September).

Rate figures removed, 15 August 2026. This page previously carried per-kilometre and per-load rate ranges. They were not derived from any rate dataset we hold — we could not show you where a single one came from, so we took them down rather than leave them standing as the anchor for your next negotiation. What we publish instead is computed and checkable: corridor distances from our own route geometry, toll costs from the SANRAL Class 4 schedule, and the current DMRE diesel price. Build your rate from your own cost per kilometre plus those inputs, and know your floor before you quote.
