Running an empty truck on the return leg costs you fuel, driver wages, and tyre wear with zero revenue. Backhaul loads — freight on your return journey — are the single fastest way to improve your margin per kilometre. This guide explains how to find return loads on every major South African corridor in 2026.
What Are Return Loads (Backhaul Freight)?
A return load, also called a backhaul load, is cargo that fills your truck on the trip back after a delivery. If you hauled fertiliser from Johannesburg to Durban, a backhaul load would be goods moving from Durban back toward Johannesburg — containers, auto parts, fresh produce, or retail goods heading inland.
Without a backhaul load, you drive empty. Every empty kilometre costs roughly R8–R12 in fuel alone on a 34-ton combination vehicle. Loaded and empty kilometres carry the same fixed cost, which is why running back empty doubles the fuel cost of every paid kilometre. On the JHB–Durban run (approximately 580 km), that is R4,600–R7,000 in avoidable cost per trip.
South Africa's Main Backhaul Corridors
Durban ↔ Johannesburg (N3)
The busiest freight corridor in Africa. Northbound moves cars, electronics, and import containers from the Durban port. Southbound (the backhaul direction) moves mining consumables, steel, and agricultural products. High load availability in both directions makes this one of the easiest corridors to backhaul on.
Cape Town ↔ Johannesburg (N1)
Fruit, wine, and fish move east from the Western Cape. Electronics, machinery, and FMCG goods move west as backhaul. The distance (~1,400 km) makes every empty return particularly expensive — finding a backhaul load here can add R15,000–R25,000 to a single trip.
Johannesburg ↔ Zimbabwe (Beitbridge)
Southbound from Zimbabwe: tobacco, chrome, cotton, and horticultural produce. Northbound backhaul: groceries, cement, steel, and general merchandise. High demand, consistent volumes. See our Harare to Johannesburg return loads guide for specifics.
Johannesburg ↔ Durban ↔ Maputo (N4)
Mozambican exports (coal, aluminium, prawns) move southwest. The return leg from Maputo or Matola carries construction materials, groceries, and manufacturing inputs into Mozambique.
How to Find Return Loads in South Africa
1. Use a Load Board
A load board connects cargo owners who need transport with truck operators who have capacity. Kweli's Load Exchange is free to use and shows open loads across all South African corridors in real time. You can filter by origin, destination, and equipment type — making it easy to find a backhaul load that matches your return route before you even deliver your outbound cargo.
2. Contact Freight Brokers on Your Return Route
Freight brokers at major hub cities (Durban, Cape Town, PE/Gqeberha) often have loads ready for collection. Contact them before your delivery leg so a backhaul is lined up when you arrive.
3. Build Relationships with Regular Shippers
Seasonal shippers — citrus exporters in Limpopo, coal mines in Mpumalanga — need consistent capacity. Offering backhaul rates below your primary rate secures repeat volume and keeps your truck moving.

Rate figures removed, 15 August 2026. This page previously carried per-kilometre and per-load rate ranges. They were not derived from any rate dataset we hold — we could not show you where a single one came from, so we took them down rather than leave them standing as the anchor for your next negotiation. What we publish instead is computed and checkable: corridor distances from our own route geometry, toll costs from the SANRAL Class 4 schedule, and the current DMRE diesel price. Build your rate from your own cost per kilometre plus those inputs, and know your floor before you quote.
Rates are indicative for a 34-ton combination vehicle (interlink/superlink). Actual rates depend on equipment type, commodity, access conditions, and market supply/demand at the time of quoting.
