Diesel 50ppm at Walvis Bay is N$27.86 a litre from 2 September 2026, up N$1.60. Because the Namibia dollar is pegged one-to-one with the rand, that is R27.86 — and it sits below South Africa’s R29.11 inland wholesale price. For anyone running the Trans-Kalahari, that is the whole point of this page.
The one-line version. Walvis Bay to Johannesburg on the Trans-Kalahari is 1 902 km of road. At N$27.86 and 2.5 km per litre the diesel is about N$21 200. Of the September increase, N$228 of it is the road user charge alone — a levy rise, not an oil price rise.
Who sets the price, and how often
Fuel prices are set by the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, reviewed monthly, announced in the last days of the month and effective on the first Wednesday. The minister responsible is Modestus Amutse.
🔴 The name has changed and a lot of published material has not caught up. This is the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy — not the older “Ministry of Mines and Energy”. If you are quoting a source that still uses the old name, check how old the rest of it is.
Namibia regulates a pump price, and it sets a different one for each town. Walvis Bay is the base, because that is where the fuel lands; every inland town pays a transport differential on top. Every figure on this page is the Walvis Bay price, which is what the announcements quote and what matters if you are lifting at the port.

The trend — and why this window is six months, not twelve
🔴 We could not read the ministry’s own announcements, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. As at 1 September 2026 the domain mme.gov.na returns no address record at all — checked against both Google and Cloudflare public resolvers — so the ministry’s website is unreachable. Every figure below therefore comes from a named Namibian news report of a named ministerial announcement. We did not estimate the months we could not evidence, so the window starts in April 2026. A short honest series beats a long invented one, and we extend this forward with each review.

What it shows
- Diesel rose 17.9% between April and September, from N$23.63 to N$27.86.
- The May jump was N$4.63 in one step — the largest single move in the window, and it came after the National Energy Fund had already absorbed around N$1.3 billion of under-recovery on the industry’s behalf.
- July looks like a fall and was not really one. Prices dropped to N$24.26 while fuel levies were running at half rate. When the levies were restored in August the price went straight back up N$2.10. The relief was temporary and it was announced as temporary.
- 🔴 One point is genuinely disputed. For 2 September two Namibian outlets swap the two diesel grades — one gives 50ppm as N$27.96 and 10ppm as N$27.86, the other the reverse. We use N$27.86 for 50ppm because 10ppm has been the dearer grade in every other month on record. We would rather show you the disagreement than quietly pick one.
What drove it — and the part that is purely domestic
| Force | What happened | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| The global product price | The ministry quantified the August review precisely: diesel 50ppm averaged US$161.71 a barrel in August against US$145.30 in July, up 11.29%. It attributes the pressure to continued Middle East tension and disruption to crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz. | Nobody here |
| The exchange rate | Actually working for Namibia in September: the Namibia dollar strengthened 1.61% to N$16.20 per US dollar. It was not enough to offset an 11% product move. Because the currency is pegged to the rand, this force is identical to South Africa’s. | Nobody here |
| Levies and the fund | 🔴 The domestic lever, and in 2026 it moved three times. Levies were halved from April to July, then fully restored in August, and from 2 September the road user charge rose 30 cents, from 243 to 273 cents a litre, to fund feeder-road projects. Separately the National Energy Fund has been absorbing under-recoveries — around N$800 million in one month, then N$47.2 million the next. | The government |
What the road user charge means for you specifically. Thirty cents a litre sounds like nothing. On the 1 902 km Walvis Bay–Johannesburg leg at 2.5 km per litre it is N$228 one way, N$456 return — and it is permanent, where a product-price move is not. If your rates carry a fuel clause pegged to the pump price it is already covered. If they do not, this one is worth a conversation, because it will not come back down. Here is how to put a fuel clause in a rate.
What it costs on the Namibian corridors we measure
Namibia is the smallest of our five corridor sets — 13 of our 269 active corridors touch it — but they are long ones, and Walvis Bay is a real alternative gateway to Durban for Botswana, Zambia and the Copperbelt. Worked at 2.5 km per litre, which is a loaded interlink on reasonable road. A lighter rig does better and a hard pull does worse — the point is the shape, and your own figure slots straight in.
| Leg | km | Diesel, one way | in USD | Same fuel at the SA wholesale price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walvis Bay – Windhoek | 402 | N$4 477 | US$278 | US$290 |
| Windhoek – Keetmanshoop | 498 | N$5 544 | US$344 | US$359 |
| Windhoek – Oshakati | 712 | N$7 935 | US$492 | US$514 |
| Windhoek – Johannesburg | 1 396 | N$15 556 | US$965 | US$1 009 |
| Walvis Bay – Gaborone (Trans-Kalahari) | 1 504 | N$16 765 | US$1 040 | US$1 087 |
| Walvis Bay – Johannesburg (Trans-Kalahari) | 1 902 | N$21 197 | US$1 315 | US$1 374 |
| Walvis Bay – Lusaka (Trans-Caprivi) | 2 311 | N$25 758 | US$1 598 | US$1 670 |
The peg is the thing to understand
The Namibia dollar is pegged one-to-one to the rand. A South African operator crossing at Ariamsvlei is not taking any currency risk at all, and can read a Namibian pump price as if it were a South African one. That is unusual and it is worth using.
| Diesel | What kind of price | |
|---|---|---|
| Namibia, Walvis Bay | N$27.86 | regulated pump price |
| South Africa, inland | R29.11 | wholesale list — the pump is higher |
On paper Namibian diesel is 4.3% below the South African inland wholesale price. But the Namibian figure is what you actually pay at a pump and the South African one is a wholesale list price that sits below South African retail — so the real gap in your favour is wider than 4.3%. Southbound out of Namibia, fill before you cross. The South African series is here.
The Trans-Kalahari caution. The distances between fuel stops on this route are longer than on the eastern corridors, which changes the calculation. Optimising for the cheapest fill point is a poor trade against running low in the Kalahari. Tank up where you can, and take the price advantage where the route offers it. Questions people ask
What is the diesel price in Namibia now?
N$27.86 a litre for diesel 50ppm at Walvis Bay, effective 2 September 2026. Diesel 10ppm is N$27.96 and petrol 95 is N$25.08. Inland towns pay a transport differential above the Walvis Bay base.
Who sets fuel prices in Namibia?
The Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy — renamed from the former Ministry of Mines and Energy. It reviews monthly and the new price takes effect on the first Wednesday of the month.
Is Namibian diesel cheaper than South African diesel?
Yes, and by more than it looks. N$27.86 against R29.11 is 4.3% on the face of it, but the South African figure is an inland wholesale list price while the Namibian one is a pump price. Compared pump to pump the gap is wider.
Does the exchange rate affect a South African operator buying fuel in Namibia?
No. The Namibia dollar is pegged one-to-one to the rand and rand are accepted in Namibia, so there is no conversion and no currency risk on the fuel.
Why did Namibian fuel go up in August and again in September 2026?
Two different reasons. August was the restoration of fuel levies that had been halved from April to July. September was an 11.29% rise in the international diesel price, plus a 30 cent increase in the road user charge to fund feeder roads.
What is the road user charge in Namibia?
273 cents a litre from 2 September 2026, up from 243 cents. It funds national feeder-road projects. Unlike a product-price move it is a policy change, so it does not unwind when oil prices fall.
How we put this together
🔴 Namibia is the one country in this set where we could not reach the regulator directly: mme.gov.na has no DNS address record as at 1 September 2026, so the ministry’s own monthly announcements could not be read. Each price below therefore carries the named news report of the named ministerial announcement it came from, and the April figure is derived from the May announcement’s stated increase rather than read directly. Where two outlets disagree, we say so in the text rather than choosing silently. Corridor distances are our own, measured on the road network rather than straight-line. Currency conversions use one dated quote for every post in this set — exchangerate-api.com, reading of 1 September 2026 — so the six countries can be compared with each other. Rates move; the litre price is the number to trust, not the dollar one.
