The tautliner (curtainsider) is the most common freight vehicle on South African roads. Its combination of full enclosure, easy side-loading, and versatility makes it suitable for the widest range of commodities — which means tautliner loads are available on every major corridor, every day. This guide covers what tautliner loads pay, which corridors have the most volume, and how to find verified tautliner freight.
What Is a Tautliner?
A tautliner (also called a curtainsider or curtain-side trailer) has a rigid roof and floor with retractable side curtains made of heavy-duty PVC. The curtains slide open fully on both sides, allowing forklifts to load from any angle without the constraints of a box trailer. Most South African tautliners are 13.6-metre trailers with a payload of 24–26 tons, often pulled as a horse-and-trailer combination or as part of a superlink (two trailers).
What Commodities Move on Tautliners?
Tautliners carry the broadest range of goods of any trailer type in South Africa:
- FMCG and retail — food, beverages, household goods, clothing. High-frequency, consistent volumes from DCs in Gauteng to retail across the country.
- Tobacco — Zimbabwe and Limpopo tobacco bales. Seasonal (March–September). High-value.
- Cotton and agricultural produce — seasonal, SADC cross-border and domestic.
- Boxed citrus and deciduous fruit — Western Cape outbound, ventilated tautliner preferred.
- Bagged goods — cement, maize meal, flour, animal feed, fertiliser.
- Automotive parts — from OEM plants (Rosslyn, Prospecton, East London) to dealerships.
- Bottled beverages and wine — palletised, fragile, tautliner for easy side-access.
- Building materials — tiles, sanitaryware, roofing materials.
- General import cargo — from Durban, Cape Town, and Ngqura ports inland.

Rate figures removed, 15 August 2026. This page previously carried per-kilometre and per-load rate ranges. They were not derived from any rate dataset we hold — we could not show you where a single one came from, so we took them down rather than leave them standing as the anchor for your next negotiation. What we publish instead is computed and checkable: corridor distances from our own route geometry, toll costs from the SANRAL Class 4 schedule, and the current DMRE diesel price. Build your rate from your own cost per kilometre plus those inputs, and know your floor before you quote.

Peak Seasons for Tautliner Loads
- January–March: Post-holiday retail restocking. High FMCG volumes JHB → all directions.
- March–September: Zimbabwe tobacco season. Northbound FMCG peaks to match southbound tobacco.
- June–September: Citrus season in Western Cape. Cape Town → JHB backhaul high demand.
- October–December: Pre-Christmas retail build-up. Busiest period of the year for tautliner loads nationwide.
