Flatdeck Loads South Africa 2026 — Find Flatbed Freight for Your Truck

Flatdeck operators carry some of the highest-value, most challenging freight on South African roads — oversized machinery, steel coils, mining equipment, construction materials. The loads are fewer than for tautliners, but the rates per kilometre are often higher to compensate for specialised loading, securing, and permitting requirements. This guide covers where flatdeck loads are concentrated, what they pay, and how to find them.

What Is a Flatdeck?

A flatdeck (also called a flatbed or flat trailer) is an open platform trailer with no sides or roof. The entire deck is accessible from any direction, making it ideal for cargo that is too tall, too wide, or too awkward to fit inside an enclosed trailer — or cargo that needs to be craned or side-lifted.

Rate figures removed, 15 August 2026. This page previously carried per-kilometre and per-load rate ranges. They were not derived from any rate dataset we hold — we could not show you where a single one came from, so we took them down rather than leave them standing as the anchor for your next negotiation. What we publish instead is computed and checkable: corridor distances from our own route geometry, toll costs from the SANRAL Class 4 schedule, and the current DMRE diesel price. Build your rate from your own cost per kilometre plus those inputs, and know your floor before you quote.

Rates for standard flatdeck. Oversized loads requiring escort, abnormal permits, or night-driving restrictions attract a premium of 20–40% above standard rates.

Abnormal Load Permits — What You Need to Know

Flatdeck loads exceeding standard legal dimensions (4.3m wide, 4.2m high, 22m long for a combination vehicle) require abnormal load permits from the relevant road authority. In South Africa this means SANRAL and/or the provincial road authority. For cross-border loads into Zimbabwe, Zambia, or Mozambique, each country's road authority issues its own permit.

Allow 2–5 working days for permit processing. Oversized loads may also require police escort, route surveys, and time-of-day restrictions (typically no movement during peak hours in urban areas).
