A superlink — two trailers pulled by a single horse — is the highest-capacity road freight combination legally permitted on South African public roads. With payloads of 40–56 tons depending on permit status, a superlink earns significantly more per trip than a standard horse-and-trailer combination. But filling both trailers on every run is the challenge. This guide covers where superlink loads are available, what they pay, and how to keep your double-trailer moving.
What Is a Superlink?
A superlink consists of a horse (truck tractor) pulling a converter dolly with two semi-trailers in tandem. The configuration is also called a B-train or double-trailer combination. In South Africa, a standard superlink consists of two 13.6-metre curtainsider (tautliner) trailers, though flatdeck, reefer, and tipper configurations also exist.
Key specifications:
- Total length: up to 22 metres (combination vehicle limit on public roads)
- Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM): up to 56 tons on approved routes with special permit
- Standard payload: 40–44 tons on most routes
- Turning radius: requires wider roads and turning areas — some urban delivery points cannot accommodate superlinks
Why Superlinks Earn More
A superlink carrying 44 tons at R18/km on the JHB–Durban corridor earns R10,440 per trip — approximately 65% more than a standard 26-ton tautliner at the same rate. Over a month of consistent runs, the difference is substantial. The economics work particularly well on high-frequency corridors where loads are available in both directions, minimising empty running on either leg.
Best Corridors for Superlink Loads
Johannesburg ↔ Durban (N3)
The highest-volume corridor in Africa. Both directions have consistent loads: FMCG and retail southbound; import containers, steel, and auto parts northbound. High frequency means low risk of empty return running. The N3 is superlink-friendly — wide, well-maintained highway with good facilities.
Johannesburg ↔ Cape Town (N1)
Long-haul but high-volume. Superlinks are efficient here because the long distance makes per-trip earnings high. Seasonal fruit backhaul (Cape Town to JHB, June–September) provides consistent return loads during the peak citrus season.
Johannesburg → Richards Bay via Durban
Coal, chemicals, bulk minerals on the N3/N2. Richards Bay's Coal Terminal generates continuous inbound tipper superlink traffic from Mpumalanga.
Mpumalanga Coal Belt (Short-Haul)
Mine to power station, mine to rail siding, mine to Richards Bay. Tipper superlinks with side-tip configurations run continuous short-haul circuits — low risk, high volume, but lower per-km rate than long-haul.

Rate figures removed, 15 August 2026. This page previously carried per-kilometre and per-load rate ranges. They were not derived from any rate dataset we hold — we could not show you where a single one came from, so we took them down rather than leave them standing as the anchor for your next negotiation. What we publish instead is computed and checkable: corridor distances from our own route geometry, toll costs from the SANRAL Class 4 schedule, and the current DMRE diesel price. Build your rate from your own cost per kilometre plus those inputs, and know your floor before you quote.
Rates for superlink combination. Higher rates than standard tautliner reflect additional payload capacity. Abnormal load permits required above standard GVM limits.
Compliance Requirements for Superlinks
- Roadworthy certificate — for both trailers and the horse
- Cross-border permits (CBRTA) — for any cross-border runs
- Abnormal load permit — if GVM exceeds standard limits
- Operator card — for operator registration and compliance
- Both trailers must be insured — confirm your GIT insurance covers the full combination payload
