Special Cargo: The Loads Where the Truck Is Ordinary and Nothing Else Is

Special cargo is the freight where the truck is ordinary and everything else is not. It fits inside every legal limit. It needs no permit for its size. And it will still refuse to travel unless the trailer, the cleaning regime, the certification and the driver are all the right ones.

Kweli’s equipment catalogue recognises 17 trailer types across the three special families — liquid, temperature-controlled and specialised. This is what separates them, and why so few of them can substitute for each other.

Liquid — six tankers that look alike and are not

From a distance these are one vehicle: a steel cylinder on a tri-axle. Up close they are six different businesses.

TypeCapacityWhat defines it
Fuel tanker25 000–50 000 ℓMulti-compartment · ADR certified · metered discharge
Chemical tanker20 000–35 000 ℓChemical resistant · ADR/Hazchem · safety equipment
Food grade tanker25 000–35 000 ℓFood grade · stainless steel · CIP cleaning
Bitumen tanker20 000–35 000 ℓHeated · insulated
LPG tanker18 000–45 000 ℓPressure vessel · safety certified
Water tanker10 000–36 000 ℓSpray bar option · dust suppression

Three of those differences are structural, not procedural. An LPG tanker is a pressure vessel — it is built to a different standard because its cargo is not a liquid at atmospheric pressure. A bitumen tanker is heated and insulated, because its cargo solidifies. A food-grade tanker is stainless with a clean-in-place system, because the next load is going into people.

You cannot carry milk in a bitumen tanker on any timescale, and the reason is the steel, not the paperwork.

Temperature-controlled — four, and one of them has no fridge

TypePayloadWhat defines it
Refrigerated / reefer22–28 tTemperature controlled · −25 °C to +25 °C · perishables · pharmaceuticals
Freezer20–26 tDeep freeze · −30 °C capable
Insulated24–30 tPassive insulation · no refrigeration unit · cost effective
Curtain-side reefer22–26 tSide loading · temperature controlled

The insulated trailer is the one to understand. It has no refrigeration unit — it slows a temperature change rather than setting one. That makes it cheaper to buy and to run, and it makes it the wrong vehicle for anything that must arrive at a temperature rather than merely arrive near one. It is a shorter-journey answer.

Note the payload column too. A reefer carries 22–28 t where a tautliner of the same length carries 28–34 t: the unit and the insulation are heavy, and that difference comes off your revenue every trip.

Specialised — seven, mostly one-cargo vehicles

Livestock is the family where the cargo has its own interests. The catalogue records animal welfare as a defining feature alongside ventilation and multi-deck construction, which is the honest description: it is not simply a box with holes in it, and the journey has obligations that do not apply to steel.

Ventilated and multi-deck — the two features our catalogue records for this type, both visible. The third it records is animal welfare, which is not a feature of the steel.

The rest are close to single-purpose. A glass A-frame carries flat panels and very little else. A car carrier’s adjustable decks are its whole value and its whole limitation. These are narrow markets: less competition for the work, far less to fall back on when it is quiet.

What we record about your truck, and what we do not

This matters more in this section than anywhere else on the site, so it gets said plainly.

Two trailer types in our catalogue describe themselves as ADR certified — the fuel tanker and the chemical tanker. That is a statement about the type.

We record nothing about whether any individual truck is. The catalogue has a field for it and it is empty across all 34 types; the vehicle records have no such field at all. So if you are a shipper moving chemicals, nothing on this platform tells you that a particular operator’s tanker is certified — you have to ask them, and see the certificate.

That is a gap in what we hold, not a gap in what matters. It is written here rather than left for you to discover.

What this network actually carries

Of 251 real loads posted on Kweli Load Exchange, the special families are a small share: food and beverages 9 · vehicles 7 · fuel 1, against general freight at 96 and mining at 47.

Read that as a market signal in both directions. Special work is thin on this board, which means less competition — and it also means you should not buy a specialised trailer on the strength of what you see here.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a reefer and an insulated trailer?
A reefer has a refrigeration unit and holds a temperature — our catalogue records a −25 °C to +25 °C range. An insulated trailer has no unit at all; it only slows a temperature change. It is cheaper and it suits shorter journeys where the cargo must stay near a temperature rather than at one.

Can one tanker carry different liquids?
Within a family, sometimes. Across families, generally not. A food-grade tanker is stainless with a clean-in-place system; a bitumen tanker is heated and insulated; an LPG tanker is a pressure vessel. Those are structural differences, not paperwork.

How cold does a freezer trailer go?
Our catalogue records the freezer type as −30 °C capable, against a reefer’s −25 °C to +25 °C range. Your own unit’s specification is the one that counts.

Does Kweli show whether a truck is ADR certified?
No. Two trailer types are described as ADR certified at the type level, but we record nothing about individual vehicles — there is no such field on a truck record. Ask the operator and ask to see the certificate.

Why does a reefer carry less than a tautliner?
The refrigeration unit and the insulated body are heavy. A reefer typically carries 22–28 t against a tautliner’s 28–34 t at the same length.

Where this comes from

This page describes equipment, not compliance. Carrying fuel, chemicals, gas, food or animals brings obligations well beyond the trailer — licensing, training, documentation and inspection — and none of that is covered here.
