The Dar es Salaam to Lusaka corridor by road is one of the most active freight routes in east-central Africa, connecting Tanzania’s main port with Zambia’s capital and the Copperbelt mining region. Whether you’re hauling imports cleared at DSM for Lusaka delivery or positioning for a Copperbelt backhaul, this guide covers the route, crossing procedure, costs, and what loads to expect in both directions.
The Route: Great North Road via Tunduma
The standard road route from Dar es Salaam to Lusaka follows the Great North Road — Tanzania’s main arterial south — through the following stages:
- Dar es Salaam → Morogoro (~200 km): Relatively fast, dual-carriageway stretches on the A7. Watch for heavy port traffic leaving DSM
- Morogoro → Iringa (~250 km): Climbing to the southern highlands, road quality generally good but winding in sections
- Iringa → Mbeya (~260 km): Tanzania southern highlands, descent into Mbeya. Mbeya is the major fuel and rest stop before the border
- Mbeya → Tunduma (~100 km): Final stretch to the Tanzania-Zambia border. Road surface variable in places
- Tunduma (Tanzania) → Nakonde (Zambia): Border crossing — see below for detail
- Nakonde → Kasama → Lusaka (~650 km): Zambia’s Great North Road, variable surface quality. Kasama is approximately halfway; Lusaka is in the south
Total road distance: approximately 1,945 km. Verify current routing via Google Maps before each trip — road works and diversions affect travel times.
Speed limit for heavy commercial vehicles on Tanzania highways: 80 km/h. Zambia also enforces HCV speed limits — check with RTSA for current limits.
Tunduma/Nakonde Border Crossing
Tunduma (Tanzania side) / Nakonde (Zambia side) is the primary land crossing on this corridor. It is a busy border with both commercial truck traffic and passenger vehicles. Queue times vary significantly:
- Off-peak: 4–12 hours total crossing time
- Month-end and quarter-end: 24–48 hours or longer — significant queue build-up common
- Best arrival time: Early morning on a weekday, mid-month
The border operates as a partial One Stop Border Post but processing is on each side separately. Use a clearing agent with experience on both TRA (Tanzania) and ZRA (Zambia Revenue Authority) sides to reduce time.
For a detailed breakdown of the Tunduma crossing — documents, lanes, agent contacts — see our Tunduma Border Crossing Trucking Guide.
Documents Required for This Corridor
Tanzania side (TRA/SUMATRA):
- SUMATRA foreign vehicle permit (for non-Tanzanian trucks)
- TRA transit bond / customs entry — arranged through a licensed clearing agent
- COMESA Yellow Card insurance
- Cargo documentation: bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list
Zambia side (ZRA/RTSA):
- Zambia RTSA road user permit for foreign vehicles
- ZRA customs entry or transit bond (if cargo transiting onward)
- COMESA Yellow Card (same document, valid for Zambia)
- Driver: valid PrDP or equivalent professional licence
Note: Zambia is not an EAC member, so there is no EAC Single Customs Territory shortcut on this route. Both TRA and ZRA clearances are required independently.
Transit Time: Realistic Planning Figures
| Segment | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| DSM to Mbeya | ~730 km | 10–12 hours |
| Mbeya to Tunduma | ~100 km | 1.5–2 hours |
| Tunduma/Nakonde crossing | — | 6–48 hours (variable) |
| Nakonde to Lusaka | ~650 km | 10–14 hours |
| Total driving (excl. border) | ~1,945 km | 3–4 days |
These are driving times only. Add port clearance at DSM (plan 4–7 working days for first-time calls) and border crossing time to get total door-to-door duration.
Freight Rates: What Operators Charge
Rates on the DSM–Lusaka corridor are typically quoted in USD rather than TZS or ZMW, because most cargo at this scale is valued in USD and both the shipper and carrier prefer USD invoicing to avoid currency risk.
Rate-setting follows the same CPK methodology as any other SADC corridor: total monthly costs ÷ monthly kilometres + target margin. On DSM–Lusaka, additional cost items to factor in:
- SUMATRA permit cost (Tanzania)
- Zambia road user permit cost
- TRA transit bond cost (clearing agent fee + bond deposit)
- ZRA customs/clearing agent fee
- Fuel cost difference: Tanzania and Zambia fuel prices differ from South Africa — check current pump prices before quoting
For SA-based operators: if your truck is SA-registered, your SUMATRA permit is an additional cost that a Zambia-based operator doesn’t have. Factor this into your rate — it is not a reason to under-quote. See our guide to calculating freight rates for the full CPK methodology.
Fuel Stops, Road Conditions and Overnight Points
The Tanzania leg of the DSM–Lusaka run uses the TANZAM highway (A7/B1) — a reasonably maintained route with significant heavy vehicle traffic. Road conditions vary by segment. The Makambako-to-Mbeya section has historically had surface quality issues; the Iringa highlands sections are winding. Current conditions are best confirmed from operators currently on the corridor before departure.
Recommended fuel and service stops on the Tanzania leg:
- Morogoro (~200 km from DSM): All fuel brands, basic truck services
- Iringa (~460 km): Fuel, overnight options, truck repair services
- Mbeya (~730 km): Last full-service stop. Fuel, mechanics, tyre repair, good driver accommodation. Most operators overnight here before the Tunduma crossing
Tanzania fuel note: Tanzanian diesel prices are regulated by EWURA (Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority) and differ from SA SAPIA pump prices. Do not budget using SA fuel costs for the Tanzania leg. Ask operators currently on the route for current TZS fuel prices, or check EWURA announcements.
On the Zambia leg after Nakonde, the main service points are Mbala (~150 km from Nakonde), Kasama (~300 km), and Lusaka. The Great North Road in Zambia is generally passable for heavy vehicles, but isolated stretches have surface damage — particularly after rainy season (November–April). Check with RTSA Zambia for any current load restrictions or road closures: rtsa.org.zm.
Compliance: Zambia RTSA Requirements on Entry
On crossing into Zambia at Nakonde, foreign trucks are subject to Zambia RTSA (Road Transport and Safety Agency) requirements:
- Zambia road user permit for foreign vehicles (purchase at the border)
- Compliance with Zambia axle load limits — Zambia enforces strict axle load regulations. A 34-ton SA configuration may exceed Zambia’s axle load limits on certain axle groups. Check current RTSA axle load tables at rtsa.org.zm before crossing
- Driver PrDP or equivalent professional licence
- Valid third-party insurance — COMESA Yellow Card covers Zambia
ZRA (Zambia Revenue Authority) customs clearance at Nakonde: your Tanzania-side TRA transit bond must be surrendered and cancelled at Nakonde. The ZRA then issues the relevant Zambia import or transit document for onward movement. Use a clearing agent with Nakonde-side ZRA experience — this is a different agent from your DSM agent in most cases.
Backhaul: What’s Available from Lusaka
The DSM–Lusaka corridor is directional — there is more import cargo moving from DSM to Zambia than export cargo moving out. However, backhaul opportunities exist:
- Copper cathode and copper concentrate — the Zambia Copperbelt produces significant copper exports that move via DSM. Copper cathode travels on flatdeck or in containers; copper concentrate is hazmat-classified and requires sealed or specialised containers. Contact mining operations or copper trading houses for contract rates
- Cobalt — small but high-value; primarily from DRC but transits Zambia
- Agricultural produce — maize, soybeans during Zambian harvest season (March–July). Seasonal and price-sensitive
- Empty containers — if TICTS needs repositioning, repositioning fees are sometimes offered
Spot backhaul loads can be found through load boards and corridor WhatsApp groups. Register on Kweli to receive load alerts for the DSM corridor.
Extending to DRC Katanga from Lusaka
Some operators on the DSM–Lusaka corridor continue onward to Lubumbashi in DRC’s Katanga province for mining-related cargo. From Lusaka, the route continues north on the Copperbelt Road through Ndola to the Kasumbalesa border (Zambia-DRC). This adds approximately 500 km and a second major border crossing to the run. See our Kasumbalesa border crossing guide for DRC entry requirements and current crossing conditions.
