Port Elizabeth — officially renamed Gqeberha in 2021, though widely still called PE in the freight industry — is South Africa's fifth-largest city and its automotive capital. The Eastern Cape generates significant freight volumes: vehicles, auto parts, citrus, wool, and manganese ore. This guide covers available loads in and around the PE/Gqeberha area and the corridors connecting the Eastern Cape to the rest of South Africa.
Why Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha Matters for Freight
Three factors make PE an important freight node:
- Automotive manufacturing — Volkswagen SA (Uitenhage, 30 km from PE) and other OEM suppliers. Vehicles exported through the Port of Port Elizabeth and distributed inland. Auto parts flow in from Gauteng and Durban.
- Port of Ngqura (Coega) — a deep-water port 20 km from PE CBD, capable of handling post-Panamax vessels. Manganese ore exports from the Northern Cape. General container traffic growing year on year.
- Citrus growing region — the Sundays River Valley (Addo, Kirkwood, ~100 km from PE) is one of South Africa's largest citrus production areas. High reefer and ventilated tautliner demand June–September.
Key Load Origins Around Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha
- Port of Ngqura / Coega IDZ — manganese exports, container imports, automotive logistics.
- Uitenhage (VW SA plant) — vehicles, auto parts, OEM components. Outbound on car carriers and flatdecks.
- Sundays River Valley (Addo / Kirkwood) — citrus (navel oranges, soft citrus). Reefer loads northbound June–October.
- East London (200 km west) — Mercedes-Benz SA plant. Vehicles, auto parts.
- Humansdorp / Jeffreys Bay area — agricultural produce, dairy, general cargo.
Main Corridors from Port Elizabeth
N2 — PE to Durban (~1,000 km, coastal) or PE to Cape Town (~750 km)
Coastal route. Lower frequency than the N1/N3 but important for PE-specific loads. Citrus northbound to Durban; FMCG southbound to PE from Cape Town.
N10 / N9 — PE to Johannesburg via Middelburg (~1,100 km)
Inland route from PE to Gauteng. Manganese from Coega port to Gauteng processors. Auto parts and vehicles to Gauteng dealers.
N2 West — PE to George / Knysna / Cape Town
Garden Route corridor. Tourism-driven FMCG, building materials, agricultural produce.

Rate figures removed, 15 August 2026. This page previously carried per-kilometre and per-load rate ranges. They were not derived from any rate dataset we hold — we could not show you where a single one came from, so we took them down rather than leave them standing as the anchor for your next negotiation. What we publish instead is computed and checkable: corridor distances from our own route geometry, toll costs from the SANRAL Class 4 schedule, and the current DMRE diesel price. Build your rate from your own cost per kilometre plus those inputs, and know your floor before you quote.
Citrus Season: June–October
The Sundays River Valley citrus season is the peak period for reefer demand in the Eastern Cape. Navel oranges begin exporting in June; soft citrus (mandarins, clementines) follows July–October. Reefer trailers — or ventilated tautliners for the more robust varieties — are in short supply during peak season. Operators with reefer capacity typically command a 15–25% rate premium during these months.

The coastal alternative to going inland runs on the N2: our Durban to Gqeberha corridor guide has the measured 941 km route, the single toll plaza at R162, and why the cheapest tolls in South Africa are still not the number that decides the month.
Heading down the Garden Route instead? Our Cape Town to Gqeberha corridor guide covers the 749 km N2 — Sir Lowry’s and Houwhoek passes inside the first 83 km, a town every 30 km, and the single toll plaza at Tsitsikamma.
Heading inland instead of along the coast? Our Gqeberha to Bloemfontein corridor guide covers the 665 km route that joins the N1 at Colesberg — and carries no toll plaza at all.
